A Kansas City, North, man sentenced to nine years in prison for a shooting Clay County

Prison sentence

A Kansas City, North, man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for a shooting Clay County. Ebony Bates, 23, received a six year prison term for second-degree assault and a consecutive three-year term for unlawful use of a weapon. His sentencing was Wednesday.

After being on trial for two days this month, Bates pleaded guilty before closing arguments. He originally was charged with two counts of first degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action. He pleaded guilty to lesser charges under an agreement with prosecutors who said the trial testimony was not as strong as expected but was strong enough to extract a guilty plea.

According to court records, a man and a woman were shot while standing in their driveway at 1:31 a.m. July 10 in the 6400 block of North Mulberry Street. They had tried to run when they heard gunshots coming from a crowd at a neighbor’s party. Their injuries were not life-threatening. A description of the vehicle led police to Bates.
