What To Expect From Traffic Stops

What to Expect

traffic stopsGetting pulled over by the police can be a scary experience. However, if you know what to expect, then it will be easier for you to deal with it. You will need to pull over as soon as you see the blue lights behind you. Roll down your window and keep your hands on the steering wheel.

The officer will ask you for your vehicle registration, driver’s license and proof of insurance. The officer is supposed to tell you why they pulled you over. If you happen to get a citation, then you should not argue with the officer. The best place for you to fight a traffic ticket is in court.

Do not leave the scene until the officer tells you that it is okay to leave. Buckle up all before you leave and follow all of the traffic laws. The officer will stay behind you in his/her car until you get back on the road.

What are Your Rights?

You have rights if you are pulled over. The officer may ask you questions during the stop. However, you are not obligated to answer any questions. The officer is not allowed to search your vehicle unless they have probable cause.

If you are pulled over because the officer suspects that you have been driving under the influence, then you may be asked to take a breathalyzer test. It is not a crime to refuse to take a sobriety test. However, this is something that can be used against you in court. You can get your license suspended for refusing to take a sobriety test.
