John Anthony Picerno

Criminal Defense & Civil Rights Trial Attorney

John Anthony Picerno is a seasoned trial attorney with more than three decades of courtroom experience in criminal defense and civil rights litigation. Born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, he is a 1978 graduate of Cranston High School East. Prior to entering the legal profession, Mr. Picerno served honorably in the United States Air Force as an Aircrew Life Support Specialist, primarily stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1983.

Before attending law school, Mr. Picerno spent four years teaching American History, American Government, and Current Events, while also serving as an assistant basketball coach at Lee’s Summit High School in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. He holds a lifetime Missouri teaching certificate, reflecting his longstanding commitment to education, preparation, and clear communication—skills that now define his courtroom advocacy.

Mr. Picerno was admitted to the Missouri Bar in 1993. During law school, he served as a law clerk with the Jackson County Public Defender’s Office, where he gained early, hands‑on experience in felony litigation, motion practice, and trial preparation. After graduating, he was selected to serve as a Judicial Law Clerk to the Honorable Donald L. Mason (Ret.) of the Jackson County Circuit Court. In that role, Mr. Picerno obtained invaluable insight into judicial decision‑making, evidentiary rulings, and jury‑trial procedure from the court’s perspective. Judge Mason presided over the first Drug Court in Jackson County history—one of the earliest such courts in the nation—providing Mr. Picerno with unique exposure to the development of problem‑solving courts and innovative approaches to criminal justice.

After admission to the bar, Mr. Picerno served as an Assistant Special Public Defender in Jackson County, Missouri. In that role, he was entrusted with the defense of individuals charged with serious and high‑stakes felony offenses, including murder, robbery, burglary, rape, kidnapping, and major drug offenses. His work required extensive courtroom litigation, motion practice, evidentiary hearings, and jury trials against experienced prosecutors, law enforcement agencies, and expert witnesses.

Since entering private practice in 1995, Mr. Picerno has built his career as a trial lawyer, focusing on criminal defense and civil rights cases that demand aggressive advocacy and courtroom readiness in City, State, and Federal Courts throughout the country. He represents clients at all stages of litigation, with particular emphasis on jury trials, suppression hearings, and contested evidentiary proceedings. His civil rights practice includes cases against law enforcement agencies and correctional institutions, involving claims of wrongful death, police brutality, and serious personal injury, matters often resolved only through trial‑level litigation and rigorous cross‑examination.

Mr. Picerno is known for thorough case preparation, direct jury communication, and a willingness to take difficult cases to trial rather than pressure clients into unjust outcomes. He is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, reflecting his ongoing commitment to trial excellence and the protection of constitutional rights.
