Bulgarian authorities say DNA tests have confirmed that a 35-year-old Roma woman is the mother of a mysterious girl in Greece known as Maria.

Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry announced the results of the test Friday after matching the woman’s DNA with that of Maria.

Sasha Ruseva has said she gave birth to a baby girl four years ago in Greece while working as an olive picker, and gave the child away because she was too poor to care for her.

The parents of a missing Kansas City, North girl known as Baby Lisa had noticed the girl resembled their daughter. But Deborah and Jeremy Irwin’s daughter would turn 3 in November.

John A. Picerno, the couple’s attorney, said the Irwins were disappointed that the child was not their daughter but were please that another missing child was found.

They also were grateful for the work by law enforcement and the public support they have received, he said.

“The outpouring of support from all over the world has been fantastic,” he said. “They remain hopeful that Lisa will be found someday.”
