Three people were found dead outside a home in the 5200 block of Northwest 83rd Terrace late Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024, in Kansas City. The home was seen Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024. A Riverside father is suing two men charged in the drug-related death of his son and two of his friends, marking the third wrongful death claim by a parent since prosecutors announced criminal charges this month.
Rickie Johnson, 64, claims wrongful death in a civil suit filed against Jordan R. Willis, 39, and Ivory J. Carson, 42, both accused of supplying drugs at a watch party for a Kansas City Chiefs game in January 2024. Autopsy findings revealed Johnson’s son; Ricky Johnson, 38, and his two friends; David Harrington, 37, and Clayton McGeeney, 36, died of fentanyl and cocaine toxicity, according to a medical examiner. Willis and Carson were charged with delivering a controlled substance and involuntary manslaughter March 5.
The latest wrongful death suit, filed Tuesday in Platte County Circuit Court, claims negligence against Willis and Carson. Rickie Johnson argues in the lawsuit that Willis and Carson should be held liable for the deadly dose of drugs and for not helping the men when they began to experience negative effects of the drugs. “(Willis and Ivory) knew, or through the use of a reasonable degree of care, should have known of the presence of the fentanyl and the dangers and hazards that it posed including the possibility of being lethal to anyone that might ingest it,” the lawsuit reads.
Loved ones previously told The Star that no one had heard from Ricky Johnson, McGeeney, or Harrington after they arrived at Willis’ home in the 5200 block of Northwest 83rd Terrace. Their bodies were discovered two days later, when McGeeney’s fiancé broke into the home. She called police when she found a body on the back porch. Officers found two other bodies in the back yard. The case caught national attention, with internet theories about what happened to the men spreading widely. According to court records, investigators believe that Carson had dealt cocaine to Harrington in the past, and that Willis had provided Harrington, Ricky Johnson and McGeeney with cocaine on other occasions. Willis and Carson have been charged with providing cocaine-laced fentanyl to the three men.
Willis maintains that he did not supply drugs at the watch party, his attorney John Picerno told The Star Thursday. “Jordan’s defense to these three lawsuits is the same as his defense to the criminal charges — that he had nothing to do with their deaths,” Picerno said. “We’re just looking forward to a trial where we can get all the facts out in front of a jury.”
John Spencer, an attorney for Rickie Johnson, has not yet responded to The Star’s requests for comment Thursday. An attorney is not yet listed for Carson in the lawsuit. Rickie Johnson is seeking upwards of $25,000 in damages, the lawsuit reads. The suit is scheduled for a hearing at 9 a.m. July 11 in Division 1 of Platte County Circuit Court.
